ITALY AND ABYSSINIA
Sir, —"Mary" is concerned about slavery in Ethiopia. Rightly so. Ethiopia is concerned about the introduction of another form of slavery, Fascism. She has manifested her preference for Anglo-American conceptions of democracy rather than Italian despotism. She also prefers peaceful negotiations to warlike demands. Who would not? 1 share Mr. J. A. Burnett's solicitude to avert a great war, but not at any cost. Nor do I hold that "civilisation would never recover." Mussolini may dictate to the League of Nations, but the League "is not strong enough to dictate to Italy." Poor League! " R.F.P." should bear in mind that so far as the League of Nations is committed to the status quo Italy shares that responsibility equally with Britain and France. Such alleged cultural inequality a3 Italians may have experienced in America affords no occasion for complaint. Italians have had equal opportunities with other _ immigrants and they have made their own contribution to American culture. One has but to think of "Little Italy" m New York city to realise this. It is entirelv unjust to attempt to saddle "the British and French peoples" with the actions of Italy growing out of her own jealousy, covetousness and revenge. Black Guard.
