MAMAKU HILL ROUTE
GOODS LICENCE SUPPORTED ROTORUA COUNCIL'S DECISION [by telegraph—owx correspondent! KOTORUA, Friday With tho object of proving; that the contention of the Matamata County Council that the granting of goods services between Auckland and Rotorua would be to the detriment of the Mamaku Hill route was unfounded, the Rotorua Borough Council decided at its meeting on Wednesday to support the application of a Rotorua operator for a licence to operate a goods service on the route.
The council decided that in placing its representations before the licensing; authority it should 'state that other main highways leading to Rotorua were allowed to carry heavier loads than that which the Matamata County Council considered suitable for the Mamaku route, and also that when this road was opened tho residents of Rotorua considered it of sufficient importance to subscribe £llsO toAvard its construction. It is also to bo claimed that some competition with tho railways would be to the advantage of the town, which, following the decision of tho Transport Co-ordination Board not to upset the refusal of renewal of licences over the route to other operators, is new isolated from direct road goods services from Auckland.
The authority is also to be advised that despite repeated requests, the Matamata County Council has refused to arrange a conference with the Rotorua borough and county representatives to discuss any objections which it has to the granting of tho licences over tho Mamaku Hill.
