JAPANESE MISSION

CEREMONIES AT TIMARU PLANTING OF A CHERRY TREE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] TIMARU. Friday The Japanese goodwill mission arrived at Timaru from tho south to-day and were the guests at a luncheon tendered by the Chamber of Commerco. A welcome was extended by tho president, Mr. G. Andrews, supported by Sir Alexander Young. Mr. Katsuji Dobuchi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, responding, reiterated points relevant to the relations between Japan and New Zealand as emphasised in other centres. At the conclusion of the ceremony Mr. Debuchi planted a Japanese flowering cherry tree in the new scenic reserve in memory of the visit, and Sir Alexander Young planted a New Zealand kowhai. Mr. Debuchi was also presented by the Mayor with a bound booklet of views of Timaru and South Canterbury.
