FINE LEAGUE MATCH NO-RTH DEFEATS SOUTH MARGIN OF ONE POINT AN EXCITING SECOND SPELL The annual Rugby League match between the North and South Islands played at Carlaw Park on Saturday resulted in a narrow win for the North Island by 19 points to 18. The game was played on a heavy ground, and rain during the day robbed the New Zealand Rugby League of a good gate. Under the circumstances, the attendance was good. The South team set a particularly high standard of forward play and the vanguard made a tine impression. Wellbalanced scrums and clean hooking wore features of the visitors' display. The fortunes of the teams fluctuated rapidlv and the margin between them was never great. South made great efforts to save the game, and play was exciting throughout the second half. The North backs proved too speedy for the visitors, who were lacking in the finer points of the game. A few minutes before time, South was awarded a penalty kick within good range, but the captain, J. Amos, elected to kick high. North Island scored five tries, two being converted, against four tries, three of which were converted. The teams were as follows: — NORTH ISLAND Fullback. —N. Campbell. Threequarters. —L. Brown, A. E. Cooke, E. Mincham. Five-eighths. —AY. Tittleton, S. Prentice. Halfback. —R. Powell. Forwards. —W. Telford, L. Hutt, J. Laird, C. Satherley, H. Large, T. Timms. SOUTH ISLAND Fullback. —M. Standeven. Threequarters. —F. Logie, H. Knight, A. Beban. Five-eighths.—J. Amos, L. Young. Halfback.—J. McCarthy. Forwards. —J. Calder. R. W. McNeight, J. Anderson, W. Glynn, P. Serra. South Wins Ball Early in the game Cooke dashed through an opening, but lost his balance when a try looked certain. South forwards won the ball from the scrums and a fine kick by Amos placed the visitors in North territory. The South forwards repeatedly broke away and Scrra and Anderson showed excellent ball control. Only fine defence by Cooke and Brown kept South from scoring. Anderson missed two penalty kicks and North opened the scoring with a simple try. Amos took a drop-out after a force down, and miskicked the ball, which rolled only a few yards and rebounded off Hutt, who touched down. Satherley converted. North Island 5 South Island 0 The North backs played fine football and from a scrum Prentice broke away, but Amos tackled Tittleton well. Fast plav followed a good dash by Serra and Calder. Knight cut in nicely, and passing between Amos, Glynn and Serra saw the lastnamed touch down. Amos converted with a beautiful kick. North 5 South 5 Good Movement Cooke twice appeared dangerous and beat the defence badly, but Brown was in front of the transfer. South forwards swept over the opposition and McNeight tackled Campbell, but Cooke cleared with a great line kick. The best movement so far then came from the North backs. Cooke snapped up and raced past half-way and passed to Telford. Hutt, Laird and Tittleton gave excellent support for Brown to race over. Satherley failed to convert, and half-time came with the score: North 11 South 5 Fast forward play followed the opening of the second half, and again the South forwards, led by Glynn, pressed. Campbell made a nice save and raced back to halfway, where he kicked instead of passing to Cooke. Satherley was penalised and McCarthy slipped past Prentice and passed and Young kicked through. In a great race Glynn scored, for Young to convert. North 11 South 10 The South vanguard cleverly screwed the scrums, and had control. The North backs, however, were prominent and twice Brown almost scored. Amos and Knight did good work for South, but the wing, Beban, handled weakly, and Cooke cleared with a fine kick. North backs gained the upper hand and Powell snapped up in a promising South rush and passed to Tittleton, and Cooke outpaced the defence to score a nice try. Satherley converted. North 16 South 10 Not to be denied, South attacked strongly and a fine forward rally saw Calder, McKnight and Ward in a passing bout. Serra cleverly dribbled over the line and scored. Young converted. North 16 South 15 Fast Exchanges Play continued at a fast pace, with the North backs always dangerous. However, each home attack was beaten down by the dashing forward play of the South. In a melee near the North goal McKnight charged down Powell's kick and scored. Serra failed to convert and the visitors took the lead for the first time. South . - . . . . .. . . 18 North 16 Mincham raced down the touch line and Telford missed his pass. Prentice, however, beat the defence badly and sent Cooke over to score in a good position. Campbell failed to convert. North . . 19 South 18 The South forwards made- a great effort to win, and twice Cooke and then Brown had to rpce back to assist Campbell. From a penalty to South in the final stage Amos elected to kick high within goal range and the game ended with the score:— North .. . . 19 South 18 Mr M. Wetherill was referee.
