DAY OF ANNIVERSARIES
THE TARAWERA DISASTER ROYAL VISITORS ARRIVE Several anniversaries of interest in Now Zealand's history fall to-day. Forty-nine years ago the greatest volcanic upheaval since this country has been inhabitatod, tho Tarawera eruption, occurred. To the accompaniment of an earthquake and the thunder of explosions heard as far away as Christchurch, tho mountain, which had been thought to bo extinct, burst into violent eruption and took terrible toll of life. In the villages of Wairoa, To Ariki and Moura 153 people were killed, including six Europeans. The famous Pink and White Terraces wero completely buried and volcanic deposit fell over an area of 6120 square miles, tho cloud from the disturbance causing total darkness at Tauranga next morning. Tho death of tho lit. Hon. R. J. Seddon, Premier of New Zealand from 1893 to 1906, occurred 29 years ago to-day. Mr. Seddon was returning to New Zealand by tho steamer Oswostry Grange after a visit to Australia when ho died on June 10, 1906, bringing to an end tho longest term as Premier in tho Dominion's history.
Another anniversary which falls today is that of the arrival of the present King and Queen, then the Duko and Duchess of Cornwall and York, at Auckland on June 10, 1901. Their Royal Highnesses disembarked from tho Royal yacht Opliir on the following day, when they were given a most enthusiastic welcome. They were received by tho Governor, Lord Ranfurly, tho Premier, lit. Hon. R. J. Sedclon, and Ministers of the Crown. To-morrow will be the 74th anniversary of an important event in tho history of the operations of the Bank of New South "Wales in this country, the opening of the first branch in Auckland. Tho bank had been established on tho Otago goldfiolds some years earlier, but the Auckland branch was the first permanent establishment in New Zealand. Tho first premises were in Shortland Street, where the Oriental Bank Corporation, which simultaneously discontinued operations, had boon situated*
