AMERICAN YACHT
SILVER JUBILEE RACES YANKEE GOING TO ENGLAND., MAY MEET BRITANNIA (Received April 21, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. April 20 The yacht Yankee, owned by Mr. G. Lambert, which was one of the unsuccessful candidates for the last races for the America's Cup, will sail for England on April 25 to participate in the Silver Jubilee races. Yankee, designed by Mr. Frank C. Paine, was built in Boston to compete in the trials to select the American defender for the America's Cup in 1930. She had not been sailed again until last year, when she was beaten by Rainbow for the honour of defending the trophy. Yankee is Considered a fast boat in a strong breeze. Last year several alterations increasing her water-line length and sharpening her forward sections were carried out and she was fitted with a new set of sails. In a series of observation races she won seven out of nine, most of her victories being very decisive.
An announcement that the King's cutter Britannia may race Yankee in Southampton Water during the coming English summer was made by Sir Philip Hunloke, helmsman of Britannia, at a house dinner of the Roya] Southampton Yacht Club recently.. Although many English yachts have raced in America, no American sloop has visited England since 1893 and 1894, when Britannia beat both Navahoe and Vigilant. The result of the racing will depend upon the improvements to Britannia's rig, which Sir Philip hopes to effect with the assistance of Mr. Charles Nicholson, well-known English designer and builder. Britannia is not merely a beautiful racing vessel, but a comfortably fitted cruiser, with a home-like cabin decorated with taste. She may sail in a race in the wildest weather und heavy seas, taking tons of water along the" deck, but an hour after she lias come to anchor one could go below to find no indication of stormy seas.
