CITY FINANCES
CURRENT RATE RECEIPTS WELL UP TO ESTIMATE With the end of the financial year a month away the Auckland City Council has collected all but one half per cent of the amount it budgeted for in current rates. The amount of rates which it was estimated would be collected during the current year was £419,754, which represented 86.4 per cent of the amount of rates struck. Up to yesterday the total amount collected was £417,12(3, which' is equal to 85.9 per cent of the total.
More than the estimated amount of £77,500 has been collected on the domestic water rate and only £4850 remains to be received to reach the estimate on the charges for water by meter. Other receipts on tho general rating account are up to the estimate with the exception of arrears of rates, and it was explained by the city treasurer, Mr. Andrew Messer, yesterday, that the payment of arrears was behind partly because of the failure of the State Advances Department to pay the special rates owing on properties in its hands, and partly because the amount allowed for the liquidation of rates by ratepayers working relief time was about £3OOO less than that credited last year.
It was also stated by Mr. Messer that the council had estimated it would receive £29,000 in rents from citv-owned properties, and so far over £28,000 had been collected.
