NUMEROUS FIRES

CALLS IN RECENT WEEKS MANY GRASS OUTBREAKS From January 15 to February 19 the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Brigade responded to 241 calls which is considered to be a record. Of that number 46 calls were to actual fires, two were to chimney fires, 174 were dtie to grass or rubbish outbreaks, 18 proved to be false alarms, while one was classed "out of district." . Twenty-eight fires were caused by the burning-off of grass, gorse or rubbish, 43 by sparks from railway engines, two by children playing with matches, seven were set alight by children, two by electric irons having been left switched on, and one by a person smoking in bed. The superintendent, Mr. W. L. Wilson, at a meeting of the board yesterday. reported that the installation of the new 9in. water main in the Tamaki district had been completed*and its value in its relation to fire-fighting purposes would be watched with interest. The superintendent also reported a number of breakdowns that had occurred to engines of the board during tho month.

" Of course, the engines have hail a thrashing this summer," commented the chairman, Mr. J. J. Kingston. "They have been on the road all tho time. That is quite unusual."
