NEW CONGRESS
WIN FOR MR. ROOSEVEL'f RELIEF BILL APPROVED * HUGE GRANT FOR WORKS (Received January 25, 6.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 In the first important test of President Roosevelt's strength in the new Congress the House of Representatives by 328 votes to 73 passed the Government's 4,880,000,000 dollars Relief Work 4Bill.
President Roosevelt, in his message to Congress on January 7, asked it to vote 4,880,000,000 dollars for a relief work fund. He stated that instead of the continuance of outright doles the Government should put 3,500,000 unemployed to work clearing slums and on other public works. He assured Congress that the figures proposed for this work were within the sound money credit of the Government.
A promise was given that soon tho Administration would propose definite legislation for dealing with unemployment and old-age insurance. In a press interview Mr. Roosevelt pointed out that the 18,000,000 to 20,000,000 people who were receiving relief represented only about 5,000,000 heads of families. An attempt would be made to absorb these in Government works or in private industry.
