WAIKATO HUNT RACES

SEVERAL SURPRISE WINS VALPAI'S GOOD DIVIDEND SUCCESS OF CAPELLA ABBEY Only two favourites, Cynical Kid and Lord Yal, were successfij at the Waikato Hunt Club's annual meetiug at Cambridge yesterday and there were some fine dividends, Bells of How, Respectful, Capella Abbey and Valpai all paying good prices on the win machine, while La Femme Noire and Lucess made excellent returns for a place. Valpai's win dividend in the Ladies' Bracelet was the largest of the day and ho returned over a quarter of a century. The Waikato Hunt Cup was a chapter of accidents and the final stages of the contest were robbed of a good deal of interest in consequence. Victorj went to the Gisborne representative, Capella Abbey, who led practically throughout the last two miles, and won decisively from the win favourite Flower Bag. Capella Abbey gave a fine display of fencing and thoroughly deserved his success. Lord Val scored an overduo win in the Members' Memorial Handicap, his first for over two years. The light-weight horseman, N. 11. McKenzie, rode three winners, his first successes since his return to the saddle after having his leg broken at Paeroa last autumn. Conditions for racing were excellent and there was a large attendance, the gate receipts amounting to £340. Some delay occurred in the running of the programme, and the last race was over half an hour late in starting. The totalisator handled £17,928, compared with £16,730 10s last year, an increase of £1197 10s. Results: — FARMERS' STEEPLECHASE, Of £100; gentlemen riders; about 2i miles S—S—BELLS OP BOW, V.
