i VICTORY FOR LORD VAL SPRINT EVENT TO L'ALLEGRO RESPECTFUL SCORES TWICE Outsider but one of the field of six on both machines, Bells of Bow recorded a surprise in the Farmers' Steeplechase, paying a good double figures dividend on the win machine. Brio made most of the pace until he fell just after completing the first round. With six furlongs to go Royal Light, Bells of Bow, Cromwell and Forest Glow were in close order, but Cromwell fell about three furlongs from home. Royal Light looked like winning when he led approaching the last fence, but he toppled over, and Forest Glow, his closest attendant, also blundered. This enabled Bells of Bow to reach the front, and ho stayed on to win by half a length from Forest Glow, who came again with a good effort at the finish. Cromwell was remounted to get third. The others all failed to complete the course. . The favourites Cynical Kid and Sandy Dix finished first and second in the Hunters' Hurdles. Valstreet delayed the start by breaking • away and going some distance before he could bo pulled up. A good start was eventually made, and Valstreet led over the first fence, after which he surrendered the lead to Glenade, and went out of the contest when he lost his rider at the fence in the straight. Glennde was then left with a break of six lengths from Cynical Kid, with Sandy Dix, Clan Ronald and Valpai following. Cynical Kid went to the front along the back and turned into the straight, just ahead of Sandy Dix, with Valpai also handy. Cynical Kid finished strongly to win by a length and a-half from Sandy Dix. who defeated Valpai by four lengths. Clan Ronald was fourth, followed by Glenade and Carlisle. Cynical Kid was always travelling nicely and stayed on too well for Sandy Dix when the pressure was applied. Cynical Kid goes like a genuine stayer, and should make a very useful performer over fences. Sandy Dix and Valpai ran very creditable races, and the others, with the exception of Clan Ronald, who shaped fairly well, were badly beaten. Three-Year-Old Winner Owned by the Te Rapa trainer, A. P. Brady, who is at present absent in Melbourne with Teak, the three-year-old Respectful effected a mild surprise in winning the Bardowie Handicap from La Femme Noire, an outsider. Respectful and Engi were quickly in front from La Femme Noire and Reviver. Respectful _ turned into the straight just clear of Engi, with La Femme Noire, Reviver, Lady Zinnia and Gay Rose handy. Respectful ran on strongly at the finish to score by a length from La Femme Noire, with Gay Rose two lengths away third. Reviver was fourth, succeeded by Booklaw, Swift Spear and Curlew. The winner has done very little racing and this was his first success. He appears to have improved a good deal since last season, and has a fine turn of speed. Respectful is by Raceful, and bears a resemblance to Tradesman, who is by the same sire. La Femme Noire paid a fine price for second, slightly more than the winner did on the straight-out machine. Gay Rose ran on solidly after being badly placed early, and Reviver shaped very creditably. So did Swift Spear, who carried 10lb overweight. Ladv Diana drew an outside post position and was never sighted. Royal Winton was badly left at the start, and Pelagia was pulled up, returning to the paddock very lame. On the strength of his good fourth at Ellerslie, Lord Val was an favourite for the Members' Memorial Handicap, and duly won. Musquil led at a slow pace early from Master Norvrl and Lord Vol. Master Norval assumed tiio lead along the back, and at the top he was just clear of Musquil, Lord Val art! Gainsfid, who were bunched. Master Norval turned for home two lengths clear, but Lord Val finished on strongly and won by a neck. Protomint camo from the rear to be third a length and a-lialf away, and King's Archer was fourth, closely followed by Gainsfid and Musquil. An Overdue Victory It was Lord Val's first win for over two years, and also the first for the colours of Mr. A. H. Long, who purchased him over 12 months ago, since when he raced somewhat unluckily. Lord Val is in good form at present, and unless the tracks become very hard he may "win again shortly. Master Norval is rapidly regaining form, and this was his best effort since he returned from his spell. It should not # bo long before he returns to the winning list. McTavish secured the mount on the.winner practically at the last minute, owing to T. Green having to remain at Trentham. The light-weight Capella Abbey was responsible for a surprise in winning the Waikato Hunt Cup and paid double figures on the win machine. Golden England and Spalpiko were the leaders for a round, when they gave way to Capella Abbey, -who was never afterwards headed. Five furlongs from home Flower Bag closed on Capella Abbey but the latter always had his measure and drew away at the turn to win by five lengths. Lucess was ten lengths away third and Allegretto was ft. moderate fourth, with Spalpiko. Ardmanning and St. Warrigal following at intervals. The winner gave a fine display of jumping, and won well. However, he may have had a much harder race only for the number of mishaps. Cardhu was the first to fall, Roinff over at the second fenco of the double. He went on riderless and eventually carried St. Warrigal off at the sodwall near the mile post. St. Warrigal was travelling 'nicely in fourth position at the time. He was taken back and completed the course. Golden England, up in the tc&d with the winner, and London also fell at the sodwall. Ruby Meteor fell when running third about five furlongs from home. Ardmanning ran off at this stage, but ho also went back find finished tho course Luccsb, who paid a fine place dividend, was a very poor third, and it was due to the falls that he secured that position. Mia Stella was pulled up when a long way back. Eespectful Wins Again Penalised 2lb for his earlier win. the three-year-old Respectful confirmed his previous form by easily winning the Bruntwood Hack Handicap, for which he was a good second favourite on both machines to Adeline. Instalment, Adeline and Pound Sterling were the early leaders from Respectful, but Pound Sterling soon lost his position and Coronis went up. Adeline, Instalment and Coronis were in close company in the load at the top, but Respectful wont through on the inside nearing the turn. Respectful then drew away and won by two and a-half lengths from Tuaheahe, with Modern Maid half a head away third. Engi was fourth, followed by Lady Zinnia. Coronis and Friar Albertus. Respectful met some of the horses he defeated earlier on much worse terms but he madtf light of the task and won easier than he did the first time. He waited in behind the leaders for about four and a-half furlongs and then shot through to win well. Tuaheahe and Modern Maid finished on and Engi" was also closer at the finish than ut any other stage. Adeline, Instalment and Coronis displayed plenty of speed but all failed to run on. Tho top-weight Valpai brought off a big surprise in the Ladies' Bracelet, returning over a quarter of a century on the win machine. Cordon led early from Gnstronomjr and Marching Song. Cynical Tvid and Valpai moved up along tho back and at the top they were up in the lead with Gastronomy and Marching Sonpr. Valpai drew clear entering the straight to win by a length from Marching Song, who defeated Cynical Kid by half a length. Scotch Jsation was fourth, followed by Cordon and Gastronomy. Fine Finish in Sprint Valpai recorded a solid performance, carrying his weight weir and running on solidly at the .finish. Marching Song had every chance and was not quite good enough. Cynical Kid lost a little ground round the first turn but could make no impression at the finish, although ho battled on well. • The Bollard Memorial Handicap provided a fine finish and a good run through on tho inside in the straight enabled L Allegro to win narrowly. Sinking L< una, buver Wattle and Scotland were quickly prominent, with L'Allegro and Tradesman just m behind. Sinking Fund and Scotland were together in the lead rounding the home turn but they went out wide and L Allegro challenged on the inside. In an exciting contest L'Allegro won by half a Inngth from Scotland, who defeated Sinking Fund by a head. Tradesman, after being scvoral lengths behind at the turn, finished strongly onJho rails, and was almost in line fourth, with Silver Wattle Inst. It was L'Allegi'o's first win since be scored at To Rapa last March and his victory was ft mild surprise. 1/Allegro was the outsider but one of the field ol five on both machines. Scotlnnd was unlucky m being carried out at the turn by Sinking Fund, otherwise ho would probably have Sinking Fund demonstrated that he is regaining form and it was only near the end that he failed. Tradesman was .Dveral lengths away at the turn but ran on solidly at the end. LIMBOHM REACHES SYDNEY SYDNEY, Oct. 21 The New Zealand horse Limbohni, who figures among tho acceptors for the Melbourne Cup. arrived at Sydney yesterday ill good order.
