EXCITING CHASE

ARREST AT REVOLVER POINT { SUSPECT'S BID FOR LIBERTY After an exciting chase through warehouses and over rcof-tops, Sydney policemen recently arrested a man at the revolver-point in a laneway between Clarence and Kent Streets. The man made a desperate bid for liberty when he realised that he had been discovered. He smashed a window in one building and dropped 30ft. to the ground, scaled a wall 25ft. high, scrambled over a roof, and was ultimately trapped and manacled on an overhead gangway between two buildings. About 9 a.m. a man rushed into the police station and declared that his premises in Clarence Street had been entered and the cashboxes disturbed. Sergeant Johanson and Constables Mallon and Penchipy hurried down to the building, where they were joined by two nightwatchmen. From their rapid search of the building the police were satisfied that a thief was still on the premises, and an organised examination of the building followed. Several additional constables hurried to the scene, and men were posted around the building both in Clarence and Kent Streets. For more than three-quarters of an hour the detectives searched the building. Then it was discovered that the man had entered the premises next door. Suddenly there was noise of shattering glass, and from a window 30ft. above the laneway the figure of a man emerged. He dropped to the ground. Before the police could reach the scene he had scrambled to his feet, and, although limping badlj r from his fall, clambered up another wall near by with amazing speed. He scrambled over the roof-tops with the police in hot pursuit, and disappeared into another building. Again the police scoured the building. Suddenly the man appeared on an overhead gangway. "Move and I'll shoot," shouted Sergeant Johanson and Constable JVachey. "You win," replied the man, raising his hands above his head. Ladders were quickly procured, and while Peachey kept the man covered with his revolver, Sergeant Johanson clambered up to the gangway and handcuffed the man. He was iater charged with breaking and entering.
