WATCHMAN ASSAULTED
AFFRAY ON STEAMER SEAMAN SENT TO PRISON Charges of assaulting the nightwatchman of the steamer Kartigi and of resisting arrest woro preferred against a member of the crew, Angus McDonald, aged 31, before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Accused pleaded guilty. Inspector Edwards stated that the watchman, William Alfred Hanbury, complained to the police early on Sunday morning that two members of the crew of the Kartigi had women on board, which was against regulations Constable Wilson went to the ship, but. no women were found. Accused rushed past the constable and caught Hanbury, who was on a companionway, by the ankle. In freeing himself, Hanbury kicked accused on the forehead. The constable left, but the watchman found women on board later, and he had to return. Accused became very violent and picked up a 281b. hammer from the deck with the intention of striking Hanbury. When this was taken from him, be threw a hurricane lamp at the watchman. .He struggled violently when the constable tried- to arrest him. Accused stated that he became drunk on Saturday and did not remember the incident. Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on the charge of assault and two months' impriscjnment for resisting arrest, the terms to bo cumulative.
