STEAMER MAHENO
again ready for sea NEW MELBOURNE SERVICE The turbine steamer Maheno, which, for a number of years, hold tho record between Melbourne and Sydney, and made some fine passages between New Zealand and Australia, and which has been lying alongside the Union Company's wharf at Port Chalmers for over two years, lias been recommissioned in readiness to "leave next week to inaugurate the new service between the South Island and Melbourne. She has been refitted throughout. When the Maheno was ready for sea her holds were fumigated, and a complement of 132 persons in all departments was required to man her and attend to the comfort of passengers. By the time the steamer is ready to embark passengers it is estimated that the cost of equipping her will be about £IO,OOO. The Maheno will be under the command of Captain 6. B. Morgan, a master who saw long service in mystery ships during the war. The ship will sail from Port Chalmers on October 30 for Bluff and Melbourne, and for the first trip her accommodation will be fully taxed.
