BANDS IN COMPETITION
CONTESTS AT WHANGAREI FIRST FOR 24 YEARS SUCCESS OF AUCKLANDERS . , [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHANGAREI, Sunday The Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society's first gymkhana, which is to occupy throe days, commenced yesterday in cold and showery weather. A large number of country visitors was present. A special train from Auckland also brought a crowd of visitors, including three Auckland bauds, who were tendered a civic reception in the Town Hall at mid-day. The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, said the occasion was a most auspicious one as it was as fax' back as 1908 that a band i-ontest bad been held in Whangarei. Mr. G. Marsh, conductor of the Mount Eden Boys' Band, and Mr. S. Mitchell, secretary of the Auckland Provincial Brass Bands' Association, replied. A large audience assembled at Kensington Park in the afternoon, when a quick-step contest was held. Results were as follows:— Ponsonby Boys' Brass Band, 248 points, 1; Takapuna Citizens' Band, 214 points, 2; Whangarei Municipal Silver Band, 240 points, 3; Mount Eden Boys' Band, 229 points, 4. Mr. Wynne Smith, of Auckland, was the adjudicator, and Mr. J. Crocker the supervisor. At the conclusion of the contest tho massed bands played '"Colonel Bogey," under the conductorship of Mr. Wynne Smith. Mr. Smith said the playing of the various bands, generally speaking, was verv satisfactory, This afternoon a hymn contest was held. The results were as follows: Whangarei Municipal Silver Band, 93 points 71; Ponsonby Boys' Brass Band nnd Takapuna Citizens' Band, 92 points each, 2; Mount Eden Boys' Band, 87 points, 4.
