FINAL TRACK WORK

AYRMONT CHIMES' TASK

GOOD EFFORT BY TRAVIS WAIKATO HORSES ARRIVE BY ABAYDOS With visiting horses working soundly on the cinder track, there were some interesting displays at Epsom yesterday morning, when impressive work was performed by Ayrmont Chimes, Travis, Guymond, Smooger, and Wrackless. Wiriwhata and Captain Bolt also trotted solidly, while Gumdigger was responsible for a sound effort on the sand. Ayrmont' Chimes (A.' Bryce) jumped of! at the mile and a-hnlf. and, after going comfortably for the first mile in 2.221. finished hia task resolutely in 3.30. He paced very freely, and. although he was nover at top speed, put plenty of dash into his work in the run home. Ayrmont Chimes is very fit, and, being a rare stayer, should race prominently to-day. Travis (L. F. Berkett) ran a mile and a-half in 3.29);. He went smoothly throughout and was not unduly hustled t<? come home the laut half in 1.7. Travis, who looks bis and healthy, was kten to work, and, when a.llowed to turn on the speed along the back, ran from the half-mile to the quarter-post in 325. Although he has not raced for close on two years, Travis should give a good account of himself at the meeting. Wiriwhata '(W. G. Stephens) and Grand 1 riumph (J. Pnton) trotted soundly over four circuity. They increased the pace over the last, six furlongs, Wiriwhata doing bosfc , at the finish to ehow a 2.23 gait. Wiriwhata ! has made good progress Rince coming to Epsom. Grand Triumph, who ran the last six furlongs' at a 2.24 gait, gave a useful j display, and, if he goes solidly, should not be without prospects in his race to-day. Wrackless Trots Steadily

Wrackless '!L. F. Berkett), making no mistakes, trotted a mile and a-half in 3.40. Ho went slowly for the first quarter, but improved to trot the last mile and a-ciuarter at a 2.24 rate, the last half nicely in l.y, Wrackless. who is a four-year-old brother to Lord Wrack, is a big horse who should be improved with age. Last season he raced both as a pacer and a straight-out trotter and won twice at the trcrtting gait. Free Logan. (A. W. Broughton) had a mixed task of free-legged pacing and galloping and revelled in his work. When allowed to sprint a couple of times along the back, he put plenty of dash into his effort. Smooger (J, E. Smith) gave a sound display of free-legged pacing, hitting out resolutely on the last lap of a two-miles task. The Hawera pacer is very bright, although a trifle mora robust than when last at Epsom. He 6ho\ild improve with racing. Captain Bolt (H. R. Fisken) trotted three laps in attractive style, finishing up with six furlongs at a 2.30 gait. Captain Bolt, who is & brother to the well-performed trotter Great Way, has made a good deal of improvement since coming < from Gisborne. He was a little eff colour at the Wnikalo meeting as the result of a long trip kv motor-float, but hus done nicely in : the meantime

Guymond (L. F. Berkett) was sent four circuits free-legged and registered a smooth performance, running the last mile and a-half in 3.315, each half-mile in 1.12. The half-brother to Ttaydus is not very big. but is a compact horse, and went with nlentv of determination during his work. Although he failed to irace prominently at the recent Wellington meeting, Guymond performed consistently last season. Peter Pirate's Condition

L. J. Green arrived from "Waipaki yesterday with Peter Pirate »nd Lady Amanda and nlso brought Kohewah through from Tamahere. Pet-sr Pirate looks a picture and appears to have derived a good deal of benefit ftom his race at Hamilton. He was allotted strong- iogging work on the sand, and in his ptesent solid condition should lie capable of a sound effort in the Jellicoe Hundicap, which race he won last October. Although shv bears a well-seasoned appearance, Lady Amanda was net worked, having received a knock on one of her legs since racing at Hamilton, where she ran two seconds. Unless the swelling goes down quickly. Lady Amanda mt,y not race until Monday. , Kohewah shows signs of having done a lot of solid work and is in much better racing order than when she started at v> ellington last January. A. Crar, stow put in an appearance with Edna Worthy and Bonnie Direct, who were gnlloped strongly on the sand. Age has ployed its part with Edna Worthy, who has furnished into a nice type of mare. It should not be for lack of condition if she fails to race prominently at the meeting. Bonnie Direct has done well since racing at- Hamilton. where she was unlucky in missing a place in the Visitors' Handicap. She will probably do better in her engagements today and on Monday. Gumdigger (G. Webb) gave a f.ne display of free-legged pacing over three laps on the sand, finishing up with a strongly-run six furlongs at a 2.30 gait. His owner. G. A. Williams, who was present to see the horse work, was pleased with -his improved condißed'*Hope fL: "McMahon) executed sound nnhoppled work, -infusing a good deal of dash into his finishing effort. Red Hope is in splendid order , and should go well in the Stewards' Handicap, in which he will be driven by A. Bryce. Other Waiksto visitors to arrive yesterday 5 -were G. T. Mitchell. with First, Flieht., Kewpie-'s Bond and Fisher: G. McNickle. Te Rapa. with Alexis, ana E. S. Smith, Frankton Junction, with \\ aiknto Prince.' The last-named is engaged in the Green Lane Handicap on Monday. 0 Moran arrived Inst iiisrnt with Nimbus and the New Zealand Trotting Cup candidate Impromptu.
