GOLF AND TENNIS
PLAYERS FOR MELBOURNE PARTIES ON THE MARIPOSA (Received October 18. 5.5 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 The American professional golfers Paul Runyan, C'raig Wood, Denny Shute, Harv Cooper, Leo Diegel, K. Y. Laffoon and James Thomson embarked to-day on the Mariposa for Australia. They are to play in the Melbourne Centenary tournaments and Trill stop en route for exhibition games at Honolulu. The Mariposa also carried the British lawn tennis players Perry and Kirby, and Misses Dorothy Round, Nancy Lyle and Margaret Dearman. They were accompanied by P. Hughes.
PERRY'S FUTURE PROFESSIONAL QUESTION REFUSAL TO DISCUSS (Received October 18. 5.5 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 The British tennis champion, Fred Perry, stated to-day: "I am definitely going to Australia with the British team as arranged and will pliy all the matches scheduled. I will not discuss the professional question in any shape or form with anybody as I am fed up with rumours and denials." It is learned that the organisation which controls American professional tennis sadly needs a new attraction to make its tours successful. It has made the British champion several substantial offers. Also, it appears, it has been actively engaged in publishing matter in an effort to create a public demand that Perry should meet Tilden and Vines, hoping in this way to sway his decision. Furthermore, the rumours that Perry has been offered a chance to play in motion pictures probably is true, but to all queries he was non-committal. Close friends, however, predict that he is likely to accept the offer to turn professional before the end of the 1935 season
