TRAMWAY STRIKE
NO SETTLEMENT YET BOARD'S OFFER OF BONUS SUBMISSION TO MEN 'TQ-DAY ALL EMPLOYEES NOW OUT By Telepraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received October 1)5. 11.5\p.n0 MELBOURNE. Oct. IP So far there is no sign of a settlement of the trainwavmen's strike. The absence of trains to-day and this evening is really proving an advantage owing to the crowds in the streets for the opening of the Centenary celebrations. The emergency services—buses and trains —are working satisfactorily. There is little prospect of a resumption of the tramway services this week. It is reported that the Tramway Board has ofTered to pay the men half the surplus profits from the Centenary period as a bonus. This was the outcome of the conference with the Trades Hall Disputes Committee last evening. The bonus, it is estimated, would amount to about £6OOO. The board's offer will come before a mass meeting of the men to-morrow. In the meanwhile union leaders declare that the offer cannot possibly be accepted. The employees at the tramway depots have all been withdrawn, including those who were allowed to remain on duty until yesterday.
