AMERICAN FARMERS
LIMITING PRODUCTION FAILURE OF THE PROGRAMME (Received October 18, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Oct. 17 The Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Henry A. Wallace, admitted to-day the failure of the agricultural adjustment administration's programme for the control of maize and hog production. This was one of the Rooseveltregime's first attempts to demonstrate economic democracy for agriculture. The programme provided for Government benefits to farmers who contracted to reduce their maize acreage and limit their production of hogs. Already a total of more than 70.000,000 dollars has been expended this year. Mr. Wallace revealed the apparentdisapproval of the programme by farmers, of whom less than 50 per cent of the total eligible under the plan voted in the referendum taken to determine the desirability of continuing it in 1935. A bare majority of those who voted favoured the continuation and Mr. Wallace said the programme would be attempted again.
