WELFARE ASSOCIATION
At this week's meeting of the Devonport Welfare Association, it was decided to close down activities in connection with relief workers for this year. The secretary's office will still be open to deal with indigent cases and general distress. The number of grocery orders given was over 350 to 202 families, costing the association £261. This year was the first year that the association had tea-tree 'firewood, of which 145 tons was distributed, besides 260 tons of pine. These were given .to relief workers and sustenance men at a nominal cost, while there were over 600 bags of wood distributed free among needy folk of the borough to 300 families. ' The total cost of the relief for the past vear, or from April Inst, was £540, the Hobsonville difficulty being responsible for over £IOO of this amount. The treasurer's report showed a balance in hand of £29, of which £2O was reserved for urgent cases of distress after October 31. The old clothes depot in King Edward Parade will be closed after to-day.
