FIRE IN SHOP
OUTBREAK AT WAIHI [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WAIHI, Friday A fire, caused in an unusual way, broke out in a block of buildings in Upper Seddon Street this morning and resulted in damage to the stock of Mr. G. R. French, grocer, whose premises are separated by only a wooden partition from the fish shop and restaurant of Mr. H. Richards. Fish was being fried in Mr. Richards' shop and although the wall is protected, heat from the cooking apparatus ignited the partition. Mr. French returned from the back of his shop to find the front part full of smoke and flames bursting through the wall. The brigade quickly extinguished the fire, but considerable damage was done to Mr. French's stock by smoke. The buildings are owned by Mr. D Donaldson, of Remuera, Auckland.
