FLOODED COAL MINE
POSITION AT HIKURANGI WATER RISING STEADILY [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHANG AREI, Friday The flooding at the Hikurangi Coal Company's shaft mine at Hikurangi increased considerably during the night. When soundings were made at eight o'clock this morning it was found that the water had risen in the shaft to 52 feet, and it rose steadily all day. A diver from the Auckland Harbour Board arrived at Hikurangi by train this afternoon. Ho is to discuss with the manager and engineer the lay-out of tlio mine, including the positions of the submerged motors and pumps. Ho will then determine the feasibility of attempting to recover the pumps and motors by diving. It is expected that a few of the cooperative party from the shaft mine will bo temporarily employed in the company's adjoining Waro mine where the danger of flooding is becoming more pronounced with the rapidly rising water in the shaft mine.
