SOUND TASKS AT EPSOM JEWEL POINTER REAPPEARS WORTHY CHIEF, NELSON LUVAN BY ABAYDOS A feature at Epsom yesterday was the reappearance of Jewel Pointer, who looks in excellent heart and did useful work. His stableniate. Nelson's Glory, who was also brought in from Mangere, gave a pleasing display of trotting. The dirt track was in good order for fast work, but there were no special attempts at time-making.

Jewel Pointer (M. Morrison) was not troubled to step a mile and a-hnlf in 3.30. He reached the mile easily in 2.27, and gradually increasing the pace on the lust section, sprinted the final threo furlongs in 51s. Although he has not done much trackwork he looks in good order, and his owner, Mr. D. Brideson, stated that the horse keeps himself fit by plenty of galloping in the paddock. Jewel Pointer is at the stage where a few sharp tasks will be beneficial, a!nd he will be a starter at the Auckland spring meeting.

Worthy Chief (J. Pnton) and Direct Line (G. Paton) went away three lengths ahead of Nelson Luvan (C. G. Lee), with Moko Girl (W. T. Dye) going three lengths behind him, and in a good finish Worthy Chief just shaided Nelson Luvan at the close of a mile and a-half in 3.35 3-5. Direct Line piloted the field for nine furlongs, where Worthy Chief drew up to him, and Nelson Luvan improved his position. Moko Girl, who broke twice, being well back. Direct Line tired and Worthy Chief took the lead, stalling off a solid effort by Nelson Luvan, ar<i registering 1.7 3-5 for the last half. Worthy Chief paced resolutely and hia finishing effort shows that he is making a return to form. Nelson's Glory Impresses Nelson Luvan gave a creditable display, and his time for the last half was a shade ' faster than that of the winner, while he covered the journey in 3.34. Direct Line, who began very smartly, but tired in the run home, took 3.38. the last half in 1.10 2-5. Moko Girl did not go comfortably, and was eased up when she broke the, second time. Givon another round alone, Bhe trotted at a 2.28 «ait, going easily. Nelson's Glory (M. Morrison) and Grand Triumph (G. Paton) were companions over two miles, the former finishing in front in 4.55. after a very impressive display of trotting. After going steadily for a quarter, Grand Triumph ran to the front, setting a Bound pace, but after going a mile and a quarter in 3.3, he broke, and Nelson's Glory ran past him. Grand Triumph trotted very fast after settling down, but turning for home, where he was handy to the leader, he faulted, and, although finishing well, could not reach Nelson's Glory, who trotted her last mile smoothly in 2.26, each half in 1.13. Nelson's Glory was going very easily at the finish. She has furnished into a nice four-year-old, and has a fine stylo of trotting. Except for his two lapses. Grand Triumph trotted boldly and showed speed when going correctly. Kewpie's Triumph (A. Chapman) and Kewpie's Crest (K. Bell) were given several rounds at a strong pace, and then ran a mile and thtee furlongs at a 2.30 gait, improving to a 2.20 gait in running home from the three furlongs post. Kewpie's Triumph worked lazily. Kewpie's Crest was inclined to loaf in tho early stages, but when asked to step along faster displayed some energy. Munga Tangi's Task Munga Tangi (A. Laver) was given a useful task over four circuits. Auto Machine (A, Brown) accompanying him. The three-year-old. relishing the firm track, paced in fine style, and when allowed to increase the speed ixoxa the mile post, recorded 2.23, the final half ia 1.10 3-5. Auto Machine revelled in his easy task behind Munga Tangi, aiid sprinted home the last quarter at a .solid clip. Mattie Herbilwyn (A. R. Saunders), assisted over th» last mile by the Native King —lmperial Fan gelding (R. Saunders, jun.), ran a mil© and a-half in 3.45. Mattie lierbilwyn went away very elowly, and did not put on the pace uptil joined by the pacing novice, who; missing the jump-put, went away just' behind her. They stepped along briskly for the next six furlongs, where Mattie Herbilwyn, trotting splendidly, drew away tcf finish "well eleaw She trotted-the last under 2.'22, and the final half in 1.9. The Native King novice gave a useful display, completing the mile in 2.24, the last half in 1.11. „ . ...... Mountain Sun (W. Fleming) trotted, two miles without mistake, showing a 2.30 gait for the last mile and a-quarter. He is shaping up nicely with his sound tasks. Fleming's Great Parrish—Coal Light colt worked over three circuits in good style, showing a 2.30 gait for the last round. . Star Pronto (B. Dyer). with Grand Triumph to assist him for a lan. worked over three circuits at a sound clip. He set out to sprint home the last thrfee furlongs, but did not finish generously in the straight. The Nelson Bingen—Ropie Drift colt (G. Paton) and the Guy Parrish—Lou Lee colt (C G. Lee) trotted comfortably over several circuits. The Guy Parrish colt is furnishing into a nice type of trotter. Work on the Sand Autumn Lu (W. McLauglilan) trotted at a sound clip over two miles, appreciating the light weight on her back. She puts more energy into her work in saddle than is the case in harness. ' Nelson Pirate (C. F. Gicson) did not look like making a mistake while covering four laps, and over the last five furlongs he hit out smartly. His improvement in solidness will give him good prospects of success in his present class. Free Logan (A. W. Broughton) was allotted strong unhoppled work. He is in good heart after a short spell, and will not be long in reaching racing shape again. C. G. Lee gave Min Bells aind Parrish Belle separate work over several rounds, and when sprinted alone: the back they showed some dash. Both are thriving on their steady tasks and are shaping up well. Soveral horses were on the track at the time, but the coolness of J. Paton, who steered the runaway round the track with one rein, snvod any trouble. Grand Triumph was finally caught by W. Fleming.
