TAKANINI TRACK NEWS

PROGRESS OF GAY BLONDE HAVERING AND LIFEGUARD TRAY BIT SPRINTS SMARTLY The recent spell of fin.e weather has made the Takanini tracks very fast and some excellent times were recorded on the middle grass yesterday.

Gay Blonde was not doing her hebt while running five furlongs in 1 6, but she speeded up to run the last two in 245. Gav Blonde is now thriving well and looks fitter since racing last. She is likolj' to make her next appearance on the second day of the Tautnarunui meeting.

Inipasto (Tinker) finished his work with a sprint up the straight. He hit out very freely and promises to be well forward when the biff spring fixtures are at hand. Greek Gold (Fearn) ran half a mile comfoitably in 51 3-ss. The Lucullus gelding has freshened up since his winter campaign and looks as well as ever. Gastronomy (Clifford) and Lap Tip (Howard) ran three furlongs in 395. Gastronomy h«8 made progress sine* running second at Pakuranga and is to have his next race at Cambridge. Lap Up is the four-year-old gelding by Lapidary—Bon Rose who joined W. H. Patterson's team some weeks ago.

Nun Nicer (Fearn) ridden out, decisively defeated Expectancy (Jones) over six furlongs in 1.15 4-5, after taking 36 4-5s for the first three. Nun Nicer has shown no form up to date, but F. Smith now seems to have him going much better. He is to race at Paeroa. Expectancy, who was again eore bebina when she pulled up, did not shape at all well. She has not recovered from the injury sustained when Tacing at Te Raca and it has been decided to treat her to another lengthy spell. Sprint by Gay Sheik Gay Sheik (Tinker) sprinted two furlonss from the turn and put plenty of dash into his work. He looks improved as a remit of his outintr at Marton and will make his next appearance at the Taumarunui meeting. Havering (Glynn) jumped out in front of Lifeguard (Nicholas), but there was little between the pair at the end of five furlongs in 1.2 2-5. Havering, who was loaPng at the end, looks particularly fit and will be hard to beat next time out, which will probably be at Paeroa. Lifeguard showed a nice turn of speed in making up lost ground and his time '."as actually better than that mentioned. He retains all his pace and will be worth watching in any hack sprint. Tray Bit put a lot of dash into a threefurlongs eprint in 365. There is no doubt about his speed and he has sharpened up with his race at Marton. He has only to reproduce track form to trouble any maiden field. Ballymoney was let off wit?< a comfortabls effort over six furlongs, without making time: He looks ready, and. now that track conditions will suit him. can be relied upon for a good effort among the hack sprinters. Night Flight (Forsyth) ran six furlongs comfortably in 1.23. This filly appears to be milking steady progress and may be heard from at some of the minor meetings later in the season. The Kilbroney—Alonsoa filly (Forsyth) easily ran three furlonga in 38 3-ss. She has not done a great deal of work and is shaping rather encouragingly. Full Measure, Arch Ruler. Lord Willonyx. High C/est and several others did useful work on the inside dirt track. Addition to F. Smith's Team

Glen Acre, a four-year-old gelding by Acre —Lady Grant; is the latest addition to F. Smith's team. He is a solidly-built gelding who has shaped up well since being put into work. * \ Flood Tide, by Tidal—Sicilian, and the Chief Ruler—Fadokes colt are doing easy exercise under R. Miller's direction. Both are good types, but at the present neither is being hurried. P. E. Poi«e'e team has been strengthened by the addition of the jumper Brown Abbey, who is in good order to undergo another . preparation. Brown Abbey won his first hurdle race at the last Matamata meeting and later on did r§ther well, t He is a solid type who should have his beat before him. Gallant Knight has not been overtaxed since his return from Wanganui and C. Morse intends to physic him continuing his preparation for spring racing. A. Tinker had Spearcourt out at easy exercise, but the son of Spear Dance is not being hurried, as he seems to be still £to win 1 High Crest looks briaht and well after a good spell and she ia now doing plenty of eolid work. As » two-year-old she displayed speed, but raced rather disappointingly and it remains to be seen whether she will develop any .extra, stamina as a three-year-old. Lord Willonyx has again joined C. Morae s active team and at present is slightly in the rough. He has won a little minor success. but he has not been as robust as could he desired. Later in the season he may prove useful at the smaller meetings, as there are indications that age is giving him more solidity. . The new dirt track is in use at laknnini and it should go a long way to relieve the strain on the course proper. About 50ft. wide, the new track is at present in good working order and it is understood that later on 25ft. of it will be sown in grass. The hurdler Great Britain has shaped satisfactorily in his schooling since joining J. Cruse's stable at Takanini. He has shown good fencing ability in public, but has been lacking in stamina. He has an engagement on the second (day of the Taumarunui meeting. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB NOMINATIONS CLOSE TO-DAY Nominations for handicap events, and forfeits for the Great Northern Guineas and the Welcome Stakes, to be run at the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, close at 6 p.m. to-day. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Nothing very strenuous has been exacted from Chief Cook just lately, but he has been working usefully and is carrying a very bright and healthy appearance. Chief Cook will probably have his next race at Elleralie next month, and, with the work he will get in the meantime, he should be in first-class condition.

The three-year-old Quien Sabe has been treated to a course of physic and is having a few days on the easy list. Until he had a fall on the track the other morning Quien Sabe was doing well in his preparation, but the mishap gave him ft setback. It was intended to give him his first race at the Auckland spring meeting next month, but it may now be a little later before he makes his debut.

H. N. Wiggins has accepted two more a-.ounts at the Foxton meeting to-morrow, and in addition to Leo Colossus and Gold Mission he will also ride Going Gay and Princess Doreen, both of whom are owend by Mr. 8. E. Hill/of Wellington. Going Gay is a two-year-old filly by Chief Ruler from Comedy Queen ond she is to have her first race in lh3 Foxton Two-year-old Handicap.

Luck did not favour Whetuma in his races at Wangonui and his second to Sir Nigel in tjie Trial Handicap was a very creditable performance, as he was seriously interfered with in the middle stages and also had to cover a good deal of ground. If Whetuma has not been affected by his exertions at Wanganui, he should race well at Foxton to-morrow.

The performance of Hybiscus in finishing third to Rerepai and Courtega in the Spring Hack Handicap at Wanganui was good enough to indicate that he may not be loiitf in winning, as he had none the beat of the luck and was running on well at the finish. Hybiscus has two engagements at Foxton tomorrow and' will not be neglected in whichever race he is started.

The name Firebrick has been registered for the four-year-olld gelding by Romeo from Fireclay, who has been among the regular workers at Ellerslie during the past couple of months. Firebrick is moulded on very sturdy lines, but has not yet been seriously tried. However, he is. steadily improving in condition and will soon be re?.dy to move along faster in bis work.

It is reported that the Southland mare Red Sea. by Valkyrian from Whitianga. is to be retired to the stud. She has been a good stake-winner and most of the big events in Otago and Southland arc included among her victories. She won the Invercnrgill Cup twice, the ißiverton Cup, Otautau Cup. Wairio Cup. Dunedin Birthday Handicap, Southland Cup, Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap and Winton Cup. RACING FIXTURES September 22—Geraldine Racine Club. September 22—Foxton Racing Club.
