HOBSONVILLE WORK
FINAL OFFER TO MEN EFFECT OF THEIR REFUSAL NO SUSTENANCE TO BE PAID Men previously engaged 011 relief work at the Hobsonville air base, who do not accept an offer made to resume work this morning, will bo regarded as voluntarily unemployed, and will bo refused further assistance from the Unemployment Fund. An announcement to this effect was made 011 Saturday by Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of unemployment in the Auckland district. "Arrangements have been made for this work to be proceeded with under the Public Works Department on cooperative contract, under the conditions decided upon some time ago," Mr. Slaughter said. "A commencement was made a week or two ago, and, although the men employed were new to the work, they averaged over lis a day over the whole. Tho best gang averaged over 12s a day and the poorest over, 10s.
"In view of this, the work has been again offered to the fit eligible men residing in the North Shore boroughs, and transport will bo available at Auckland, Devonport, Birkenhead and Northcote on Monday morning at the same time as previously arranged," ho added. "Those men who fail to accept tho offer will, bo regarded as being voluntarily unemployed and refused further assistance from tho Unemployment Fund. This action is being taken on the grounds that sustenance payments arc only to be made to men for whom no suitable work can be provided, and that this work is suitable."
