MISS JEAN BATTEN

ARRIVAL AT TAURANGA [by telegraph—OWN corrkspondent] TAURANGA, Saturday M iss Jean Batten arrived at Tauranga by motor-car from Rotorua this morning, and at noon she was accorded a civic reception at the entrance to the Borough Council Chambers by the Mayor, Mr. A. F. Tunks. There was a large attendance. Among those present were the Mayoress, Mrs. A. 10. Newsham, Mrs. Macmillan, wife of the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister ,of Agriculture, Mrs. Hewlett, a pioneer airwoman, and representatives of all tho local bodies in the district. On her arrival Miss Batten was presented with a bouquet by tho Mayoress and Miss L. Corrigan. The Mayor congratulated Miss Batten on her successful flight from England to Australia, which, he said, called for courage and perseverance. Mr. 8. H. MaeDougall,' chairman of tho Tauranga County Council, also welcomed Miss Batten, and Group-Captain Hewlett, president of the Tauranga Aero Club, extended congratulations. In returning thanks, Miss Batten said she would never forget Tauranga, as when she was four years old she learned to swim at tho Mount. Miss Batten spoke in the Town Hall in the afternoon and evening. She will bo the guest of the Tauranga Aero Club at its ball on Monday night.
