VICE-REGAL PATRONAGE
BAY OF PLENTY SOCIETY RESEARCH WORK COMMENDED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE, Saturday At the monthly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Maori and Historical Research Society, presided over by Father Van Beek, a letter was received from Sir Cecil Day, official secretary to the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, advising that, although it had not been the custom of His Excellency, or of his predecessors, to grant official patronage to societies which had been in existence less than a year, His Excellency gladly consented to accept office as patron of tho society, in view of the nature of its activities and the circumstantial account given of its commendable energy in pursuit of its objects. His Excellency's decision was received with great appreciation by the society.
