TAXI AND VAN COLLIDE

TWO MEN INJURED COLLEGE HILL ACCIDENT DELAY TO TRAM TRAFFIC A collision between a taxi and a motor-van occurred on College Hill at about 6 o'clock on Saturday evening. A passenger in the van, Mr. Walter Clausen, aged 31, of Hinemoa Street, Grey Lynn, received severe head injuries, and was taken by a St. John ambulance to the Auckland Hospital. His condition last evening was reported to be serious. The driver of the van, Mr. Edward John South, of Yarborough Street, Ponsonby, also received head injuries, and was taken to the hospital, but after attention was able to return to his home. The driver of the taxi, Mr. A. S. Fillery, of Khyber Pass Road, was not injured.

The taxi was travelling down College Hill and the van had turned out of Wood Street when the collision occurred. After the impact both vehicles became jammed against a tramway centre pole, holding up tram traffic for nearly a quarter of an hour. The van was almost completely wrecked. The radiator was wrenched off, the cab forced from the chassis, and the bonnet crushed. A front mudguard of the taxi and a side of the bonnet were also badly damaged, and a front wheel was bent

Broken glass was scattered over the tram tracks and roadway, and made driving difficult for motorists.
