ELLERSLIE TRAINING

LORD VAL BEATS SOLOMON SOLID EFFORT BY VERSANT HAAKON SCHOOLS NICELY BY ARCHER ! / ■ Sound effiprts by Versant-and Lord Val and a smart half-mile by Chief Cook were features of the training operations at Ellerslie yesterday. Rail* was falling when the gates were opened but it cleared shortly afterwards and the weather remained fine until most of the work was completed. The No. 1 grass was available fftr galloping and the going was heavy after the rain that fell overnight. On the grass Kelly (Wiggins) strode over six furlongs in 1.30 3-5, going at an even speed throughout. The three-year-old has done a lot of work through the winter and he is very forward. Lord Val (Wiggins) defeated Soitynon (Fuller) by a couple of lengths over six furlongs in 1.21 2-5, the first two being run in 27 4-5s and the last four in 53 3-ss. They were together most of the way, but Lord Val drew ahead in tho straight and ran on very resolutely when urged near tho finish. Solomon was not knocked about and was inclined to loaf at the end. Imamint (Clarke) placed four furlongs behind in 535, going nicely throughout. She is in great heart after her winter racing, but her galloping lately has been confined to sprinting, which would indicate that she may contest the Dunedin Handicap in preference to tho Jellicoe Handicap on Saturdiiy. Versant (Holland), with On Parade (Lacassie) to assist, over the last five furlongs, covered a round in 2.1 1-5, running the last six furlongs in 1.22 4-5 and the last four in 545. Versant and On Parade finished together and were going solidly at the I'nish. Versant looks a picture and On Parade is making steady progress. Ruling King Pleases Zano Grey (Gilchrist) worked over a round and three furlongs in 2.58 3-5, the last round in 2.4 1-5. Spearcourt joined in at the seven-furlongs post, but lost ground at the-pick-up and was in behind to tho finish, being allowed to stride along within a couplo of lengths of his companion. My Money (Connor) strode over a round in 2.8 2-5, the last .six furlongs in 1.26 1-5. No fault can be found with his condition, but he now makes a lot of noise and his future prospects appear doubtful. Ruling King (Manson) pleased better than Jewelled Girdle (Browne) over eix furlongs in 1.22 3-5, tho first two in 27 3-5s nnd tho last four in 555. -Ruling King ia'thoroughly fit nnd worked'pleasingly, whereas Jewelled •Girdle had one of his off days and v/ent lazily. Hawthorn (Buchanan) appeared to be going better than Horotiu (Clarke) and Sir Val (Bigham) at tho conclusion of six furlongs in 1.22 3-5, the last threo in 41 2-ss. Hawthorn is very bright and muscular and should be ready to reproduce his best form on Saturday. Barograph (Manson) uae better than Gay Sol (Fergus) and The Broker (Baker) over half a mile in 53 2-ss. Royal Appellant and Master Rex. after trotting once round tho sand, ran half a mile in even time._ Royal Appellant is thriving and his condition is improving each week. Killadar (Fergus) and Neil (Clarke) covered four furlongs in 57 1-58. Killadar is brightening up and doing well and with a continuation of his present rate of progress ho may come to hand quicker than appeared likely a few weeks ago. Chief Cook's Half-mile

Jalldy Karo (Manson) was going easily in front of United (Baker) and Moonfteet (Bentley) at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.7 2-5. Jalldy Karo is full of muscle and is in better form at present than for soino time past. Chief Cook (Wiggins) went very freely over half a milo in 51 3-ss, the best of the morning, and promises to return to his best form for the spring meetings. Mr. E. Montague has secured an extension of his lease of Chief Cook for another 12 months. Ardmanning (Sharkey) worked over a couple of rounds, going evenly throughout. He is not a prepossessing individual, but is a wiry customer who should make a forward showing among the novice hunters in tho Greenmount Steeplechase. Aramis (Cammiek) completed a useful task with three-furlongs in 43 3-ss. He has freshened up nicely lately and will soon be moving along faster again. Baroscope (Maneon) finished up his work with three furlongs in 43 l-ss, striding along freely. Landlubber, after being slow over the first furlong, covered five furlongs in 1.13 2 : 5, the last half in 56 2-ss. Landlubber is very iolly and will be* scarcely ready to show his beßt on Saturday. On the sand Sir Abb (Wiggins) and Friar Albertus (light weight) covered half a mile in 59 3-ss. They continue to make steady progress, but will take some time yet to reach racing condition. Two-year-old Sprint On the course proper the two-year-olds Captain Bruce (Manson) and Vulmint (Browne) sprinted two furlongs along tho back from the se\en to the five in 27 2-ss, the first in 13s. They were together throughout and both hit out very satisfactorily. On the two-year-oil track Taj Yang and Fei Mah did easy work and sprinted a furlong up the straight, both hitting out freely. Tui Yan? is a nippy customer who ina.v come early, but Fei Muh may take more time, although he is making good progress. Mangu King (Buchanan) gave a satisfactory display over six hurdles. Ho is usually capable of a creditable performance among the hunters, and. although he has to concede weight to all hia opponents, should not be without prospects in the Harris Memorial Hurdles. . ■ Haakon (Burgess) showed to distinctly more advantage than Pinto (Miles) and Lenaubin ovor a round of the steeplechase fences. Haakon gave a fine display of.clean fencing and finished clear of his. companions. Pinto did not jump the first fence, on the hill nor the first fence of the double well, but otherwise his effort was satisfactory. Lenaubin jumped very carefully and also tired at the finish. Many others were allotted useful work and these included Gay Broney. Desert Star. Courthaven, Air Lassu, Chief EmeraldVolition and Morehu.
