TERRITORIAL TRAINING

POSITION AT WH ANGAREI APPEAL OF STAFF-CAPTAIN [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday In the opinion of Staff-Captain H. M. Foster the young territorial soldier does not receive the same consideration in Whangarei ns he does in some other towns. This opinion was expressed at the reunion between ex-servicemen and territorials held in Whangarei.

Captain Foster referred to the fact that there was a shortage of men to complete the establishment in Whangarei, which was supposed to produce two platoons of infantry and a troop of mounted rifles. Actually only about 30 candidates had come forward, making the position unsatisfactory. He appealed to ex-servicemen to bo tolerant in their criticism of the territorials whose standard of efficiency was limited in keeping with the minimum of training received. An attempt was being made, added Captain Foster, to form a branch of the Territorial Association in Whangarei. The object of the association would be to provide men with facilities, and encourage them to take up the work. The co-operation of the employer was necessary to make the scheme of territorial training a success. One of the chief functions of a territorial association would bo to confer with employers, to obtain their cooperation, and to arrange times for camps and general training suitable to all concerned.
