THE MEAT BOARD

AN AMENDMENT URGED ELECTORAL'COUNCIL NEED "ADVISORY AUTHORITY" [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] GISBORNE. Saturday A determined effort to secure an amendment of tho Meat Board regulations by giving the electoral council more authority as an advisory wing of the board is to be made at the next election to he held at Wellington within a few weeks. Tho Poverty Bay Sheep Farmers' Union executive, at its meeting to-day, reaffirmed its opinion that the electoral council should have the power to make racommendations to tho board, with an assurance that they would be dealt with, or that a full explanation should bo given bv the board of the circumstances which might determine that body against their adoption. "Had tho Meat Board adopted our suggestion regarding the grading of beef exports and instituting a super grade of beef three or four years ago, we might have been in a very much better position to-day to undertake the shipment of chilled beef," remarked the president, Mr. C. H. Williams. He pointed out that Mr. David Jones, chairman of the Meat Board, had informed a Gisborne audience of farmers a little while ago that the suggestion had not been adopted because the board had been advised from Home that it would not be "worth while." Mr. Williams held that the New Zealand fariners did not need to secure advice from the Old Country in tho conduct of their domestic affairs, and in allowing Home advice to side-track tho beef-grading proposals the Meat Board had deferred materially the enforcement of the improvement in New Zealand beef which all responsible farmers agreed was necessary.
