NEW FISHING SCHOONER
MANUKAU HARBOUR TRIALS VESSEL FOR WESTPORT The largest vessel built at Onehunga for many years, the schooner Helena, built by Mir. L. 0. Coulthard, underwent her trials on the Manukau Harbour on Saturday. The boat will be used for deep sea fishing on the west coast of the South Island by Mr. G. Scandrett, of Westpcrt. The lines are particularly graceful, the boat having a schooner bow and a counter stern. She is 55ft. overall, 13ft. in beam, has a draught of 6ft. 6in., and carries 1000 square feet of sail. Power is supplied by a 50 h.p. crude oil engine, which drives her at 10 knots. She is built of kauri on pohutukawa frames and the cabin accommodates six people. Storage room for five tons of fish is provided in the after part of the hull. It was intended to leave for Westport, via New Plymouth, yesterday, but as the Manukau Bar was unworkable owing to strong winds, the departure has been postponed. The-crew for the trip comprises the owner, Mr. G. Scandrett, and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. H. Scandrett and their small son, Mr. M. A. Scandrett, Captain E. R. Hodgekinson, Mr. H. Lcgg and Mr. T. Guy.
