HOBSONVILLE BASE
GROUND IMPROVEMENTS WORK TO START TO-DAY USE OF RELIEF LABOUR PROTEST BY FOUR MAYORS It is expected that between 70 and 100 relief workers will be available this morning for ground improvement work at the Hobsonville air base under the scheme lately announced. The work is being offered in the first place to men living at North Shore. Altogether 200 men are required. They will be employed under contract on terms that are calculated to yield an average worker 12s a day. Mr. G. F. Grieve, who is in charge of tbe Auckland office of the .Labour Department during the absence of Mr. W. Slaughter, stated on Saturday that if the North Shore did not provide the complement men would be obtained from other parts of the metropolitan area. . c , The proposal was discussed on baturdav morning at a conference of the Mayors of the four Shore boroughs. There were present Messrs. 11. F. W. Meikle (Devonport), J. Gui~ u i von (Takapuna), R. Martin (Northcote), and G. Mills (Birkenhead). As a result of the conference a telegram was sent to the Hon. A. Hamilton, Minister of Employment, stating that the Mayors considered that work at Hobsonville should be on a voluntary basis. The withdrawal of men from approved work in the North Shore boroughs would considerably embarrass the local authorities concerned. Owing to probable hardship the conference disapproved of sustenance where the No. 5 scheme was available. The four Mayors signed the telegram and asked for an early reply.
