CITY MAYORALTY

MISS MELVILLE TO STAND INVITATION FROM WOMEN In compliance with a request made to her two days earlier by a deputation of women, Miss E. Melville announced on Saturday that she had decided to stand for election to the Auckland Mayoralty next May. "Since receiving the request I have given the question my serious consideration," stated Miss Melville. "I have decided it is my duty to accede to the request that I should offer my services to the city as Mayor. From my experience as a member of the City Council for many years, I am in a position to appreciate the responsibilities attaching to the office. "The intimate acquaintance with every phase of business and finance connected with the direction of the city's affairs which I have gained as a councillor, a chairman of committee, and particularly as a member of tlio Finance Committee of the council, is to my mind the most valuable training a person can have for the position of Mayor. I have in addition the advantage of having a life's training in legal work and active practice as a solicitor. For these reasons I feel that it may not be unduly presumptuous of me to think that I may be justified in acceding to the request of the deputation. "At this early date it is not necessary for me to discuss any question of policy in connection with the affairs of the council. I am leaving for Honolulu on Tuesday, and expect to return early in October, when 1 will take steps to further my candidature. In the meantime I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the public-spirited women who formed the deputation that waited upon me, and also to say that I value very much the friendly reception that has been accorded by many citizens to the request of the deputation."
