RICCARTON GOSSIP

ARCADE'S PROSPECTS ARRIVAL OF VALPEEN [by telegraph—owx correspondent] GHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Royal Limond joined D. O'Connor's stablo on his return from Wellington. This gelding, apart from his success afc Wingatui last month, has been a most disappointing performer. No fault could be found with the patient manner in whiph he was trained by E. Scouller, but his owner considered that the gelding would get better opportunities for schooling with O'Connor always available to ride him. On the other hand, it would appear as if O'Connor will find it difficult to win many races with him. Thurina was given strong work on the sand to-day and appeared to be none the worse for his hard race at Trentham. A decision has not yet been made in regard to his engagement at Washdyke next week, but it is hoped that he will be produced. The Masquerader has been transferred to F. D. Jones' stable as a preparatory move toward his departure for Australia with Jones' touring team. He has got through fi good deal of work in, the past few weeks and should be in excellent order to finish off his preparation at Randwick. Nightly has continued on the right way, and, although he cannot be considered as sound as may be wished, he has suffered no interruption in his work and there is every reason to expect him to carry, on as satisfactorily on his arrival in Sydney. The Riccarton trainer J. Lindsay has secured the lease ot a rising four-year-old gelding by Arrowsmith from a Kilbroney mare.

Arcade, ridden by G. Murfitt, negotiated eight of the schooling steeplechase fences to-day and gavo one of his usual good displays. On his track essays, Arcade should win a race at some of the forthcoming meetings. , - • -

Valpeen, in the charge of his ownertrainer, arrived at Riccarton to-day.

TROTTING NOTES ALTERATION OF LIMITS NOVICE CLASSES AFFECTED BY ABAYDOS The alteration to the limits for slow class pacing and trotting races, adopted by the New Zealand Trotting Conference at the suggestion of the Auckland Trotting Club, will not seriously affect the programmes of clubs generally. The amended rule reduces the loose limits for pacers from 2.30, 3.7, 3.4-5, 4.5 and 5.3 for a irule, mile and a-quarter, mile and a-half, mile and five furlongs and two miles respectively to 2.27, 3.5. 3.43. 4.3 and 5.1, while for trotters the alterations are 2.34 to 2.32, 3.12 to 3.11, 3.51 to 3.49, 4.11 to 4.0 and 5.10 to 5.7. These limits are a little easier than those suggested by the Auckland Trotting Club, and are based on line 5 of the handicapping system for varying distances.

The few country clubs who in the past have catered for the slowest classes will not suffer from the new clauiie. Of later years horses in the lone limit races have consistently knocked a lot of time off their handicaps, and while races have been staged for 2.30 pacers tho placed horses have, under reasonable track conditions, proved capable of going 2.20 or better. Results among the trotters have been somewhat similar, although the time improvements have not been so marked, but when horses are handicapped at 2.34 they are usually capablo of going 2.24 or better. The new scheme will give further encouragement and opportunity to horses who have won a race under the previous slower limits and received the full penalties, which havo placed them on an awkward mark in maiden nces, the reduction of the classes bringing them now closer to tho horses on the limit.

An illustration of the speed displayed by winners of slow-class races in the Auckland Province during the senson is given by the following table, in whicli the distance of tho race is shown in parentheses, and Epsom winners are recorded first. Trotting horse 3 are marked T. :
