TAXICAB FARES
gj r —i n reply to your correspondent "Disgusted," my previous experience as an owner-driver qualifies me to speak on taxi running costs, and my experience in tho Atta Company enables me to state what my takings average on present fares. Operating under the Atta system, we take a passenger from the city to any suburb tor, sav, 2s 6d, then pull on to the nearest suburban stand and gradually work our way across country until eventually we arrive back in the city. I can consistently show an average return on my operations to allow a reasonable profit. I would point out that the men who are now complaining and seeking a higher rate have for the past three years operated on the present scale, and I suggest that they would not possibly have carried on for that length of time if conditions were as bad as they would have the public believe. It would be foolhardy to increase the faro with so much unemployment at the present day. The public may be able to pay 2s 6d for five miles, but if the fares are raised they would necessarily find other means of conveyance and the taxi-drivers would suffer. W. Muir.
