SCOW SINKS IN HARBOUR
VESSEL IN SHOAL BAY
CREW NOT ON BOARD \ _ SUCCESSFULLY REFLOATED Carrying 'a deck load of boulders, the 20-ton scow Maggie sank in Shoal Bay somo time during Friday night, but she was refloated yesterday afternoon. Tho vessol is owned by J. J. Craig, Limited, and sho arrived from the Hauraki Gulf on Friday afternoon. The cargo was to havo been discharged at the company's wharf in Mechanics' Bay, but owing to the strong north-easterly wind and rough seas at the wharf, the scow proceeded to Shoal Bay, near Bayswater, to shelter until the conditions moderated. After the vessel was safely anchored the crow of three went ashore.
Early on Saturday mdrning -.-it was seen that the scow had sunk, the hull being submerged, but tho main and . mizzen booms, with their sails furled, were above water. The galley had broken away and was floating on tho water abovo its original position. Preparations to refloat tho vessel were made on Saturday, and at low tido yesterday afternoon sufficient water was pumped out of the hold to allow her to float with the rising tido. She was towed to tho company's wharf last evening and a quantity of cargo was discharged to lighten the vessel and allow the hold to bo pumped clear of water. The remainder of tho cargo will be unloaded this morning before the scow goes on the slip for inspection and repairs. The Maggie is a wooden vessel, ketchrigged, and was built at Auckland in 1902.
