PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
, CARING FOR ANIMALS • WORK OF THE SOCIETY , A further increase in inspections and detection of cruelty, and a vigorous bobby calf campaign to mitigate cruelty are the main points in the annual report of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is to bo presented at the annual meeting on * .November 9. In addition to many prosecutions, inquiries were answered and advice was given regarding treatment in respect of 752 animals, 100 cases of alleged cruelty were investigated, 120 cats and 86 dogs were collected and homes were found for a larger number. In connection with tho bobby calf campaign, it was gratifying to feel that, although there was still far too large a percentage of deaths and many cases of overcrowding and neglect, nevertheless the society's campaign throughout the Auckland Province had done obvious good, stated the report. An animal hospital and home had been established' at Penrose, and Mr. J. Lyons, former Director of Livestock, would take up a position as veterinary surgeon and director of the home as from December 1. The question of humane slaughter in New Zealand was still before tho society, and work was proceeding in this direction.
