EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS
WIDE AREA AFFECTED EXPERIENCE IN WELLINGTON [B7 TELEGBAFH —PBF.SS ASSOCIATION] WELLIN GTOX, Friday An earthquake classed at the Kelbarn Observatory as between five and six on the Eossiforel scale, occurred at Wellington at 5.16 this morning, the epicentre being given as 40 miles from Wellington in Cook Strait. Slight damage is reported to three chimneys; in Wellington. A report issued by the Secretary of the Post Office states that a prolonged earthquake shock was felt at 5.15 a.m., preceded by a long rumble. No damage is reported in the South. The disturbance was felt slightly at Murchison and was more prolonged at Motueka.
The postmaster at Takaka advises .that the shock was fairly strong. At Blenheim there was a fairly strong earthquake travelling from north-east to south-west, preceded by loud rumbling at 5.17 a.m. Its duration was six seconds. No damage is reported. At Wanganui a farly severe earthquake was felt at 5.19 a.m. It started with a slight tremor and increased in intensity, causing doors, pictures and electric lights to swing very pronouncedly in an east to west direction and then gradually faded away. No damage is reported. The shock lasted for 15 to 20 seconds. At Palmerston North a slight prolonged trembling earthquake was experienced at 5.18 a.m.
