GUY FAWKES DAY
OBSERVANCE TO-NIGHT Guy Fawkes Day, which falls tomorrow, will lie observed this evening. For some days enthusiastic childrvn have been collecting material for bonfires and saving money for fireworks, and countless diminutive "guys," with their faces liberally covered with charcoal, have made their appearance in the streets soliciting pennies. The question whether, when Guy Fawkes Day falls on a Sunday, it should bo observed on tho Saturday or the Monday, has been asked by a correspondent to the. Herald. As the day is not an official holiday, no definite ruling can bo given; official holidays are observed on tho Monday. However, on tho last occasion on which the day fell on a Sunday, in 1922, the observance was made on tho preceding Saturday. It would appear that Saturday would bo tho more appropriate day, for it was on November 4 that tho "gunpowder plot" to blow up tho English Houses of Parliament on November 5, 1605, was discovered.
