SEVENTY YEARS OLD
NEW ZEALAND HERALD
SPECIAL BIRTHDAY NUMBER
EVENTFUL DAYS RECALLED
PAST AND PRESENT AUCKLAND
The New Zealand Herald will be 70 years old on Monday, November 13. Founded in a .year that was dire in its possibilities concerning the future of Auckland, the Hekald very early captured the affections of the people of the province, and the regard it then established it feels it holds to-day, testimony whereof is its continued maintenance of the circulation record among, the daily newspapers of the Dominion. It is fitting, therefore, that the Herald should mark its 70th birthday, an event of moment in the life of a person, a community or an institution, by an; edition commemorative of the occasion. Such a special number will be issued as a free supplement to the Herald on November 13. It will comprise 61 pages, and will be printed on special paper, bound in a tinted cover, and will be similar in size to the usual edition of the Auckland Weekly News. The contents will include historical surveys of the growth of the Herald, of the citj' and of the province. The events of the time £;nd the lofty spirit of public service they inspired, which led to the foundation of the Herald, will be recalled, and glimpses will be given of the lives ol: the founders, the succeeding directors and the staff and plant they gathered about them. Supporting the pen pictures of life atid events in Auckland in the 'sixties will be articles dealing with the city and the province to-day. All the articles have been specially written for the number.
A profusion of illustrations of old and present-day Auckland, the artistic arrangement of every page and the permanent interest of the whole production will make the supplement one of the most attractive ever produced in New Zealand. A feature, too, will be the announcements of a number of commercial houses whose history is contemporaneous with that of the Herald.
There will no doubt be a large demand for extra copies of the special issue. It is of the utmost 'importance that subscribers should advise their Hebald agents at the earliest possible moment in the coming week erf their requirements, as a second printing oi: the number to meet a late demand cannot be made. As already stated, the supplement will be issued free with the usual edition of the Hebald on November 13, but extra copies of the special number will be available at the casual rate of twopence a copy.
