LIQUOR ILLEGALLY SOLD
TWO OFFENDERS FINED BARMAN AND LICENSEE , An early morning visit by a police sergeant to tho Ilobson Hotel resulted in tho prosecution of tho licensee, William Williams, and a barman, Benjamin Cossey, in the Police Court yesterday. Tho licensee admitted selling liquor after hours, and the. barman, pleaded guilty to supplying liquor to n person not lawfully entitled to bo supplied. Both were represented by Mr. Bennett. Detective-Sergeant O'Snllivan said that abou* 8.30 a.m. on September 22 Sergeant Dunn culled' at the Hobson Hotol and found several men in a bar being illegally served with drinks by tho barman. The licensee was not present. "Tho licensee was upstairs at the time and did not know tho men were in tho bar until after he came down," said Mr. Bennett. The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: It was his job to know. Counsel said the trouble was duo to indiscretion on the part of the barman. Tho barman was fined £5 and costs and tho licensee £2 and costs. Seven men found in tho bar of the hotel were charged with being unlawfully on licensed premises. After hearing polico evidence, tho magistrate fined six of the men £1 each and costs, and dismissed tho charge against the seventh.
