FACILITIES FOR CRUSHING POSITION AT KARANGAHAKE [by telegraph:-—own correspondent] PAEROA, Friday For ft considerable tinio. miners and prospectors in Karangahako havo been advocating tho erection of a crushing battery, but have met with littlo encouragement from tho Mines Department. Thero arc over 20 men working on small claims on tho Karangahake Hill,' and the majority have been making a success of their ventures and earning more than they would bo receiving on relief work. The men recently formed a Prospecting Association and renewed their requests for so mo Government assistance toward tho provision of a battery. The men havo been having their oro treated at tho Golden Dawn Gold Mining Company's battery at Owharoa.

The Paeroa Chamber of Commerce has been advocating tho erection of tho battery for several years, # ind at a meeting of the chamber last evoning the secretary reported that tho Minos Department had declined to give any assistance on account of having no funds, but had referred the requests to tho Unemployment Board for its consideration.

This morning advice was received from Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.F. for the district, that the Commissioner of Unemployment had advised that, in view of tho report lie had received in connection with the amount of ora available for crushing from tho Karangah.ako area, tho board did not intend to take any further action in connection with tho matter, as tho amount of ore available did, not warrant tho expense. Mr. ]>. Leach, president of the Prospecting Association, stated to-day that ho did not agree with tho statement that tliero was insufficient oro available in Karangahako to warrant a battery, but that the future of the area depended on the provision of some crushing facilities. Mr. Leach expressed tho appreciation of the prospectors for the assistance given to their efforts to secure a battery by Mr. Samuel.
