RICCARTON CARNIVAL
NEW ZEALAND CUP DAY FAST STATE OF TRACK DISCUSSION OF PROSPECTS The New Zealand Cup carnival of the •Canterbuity Jockey Club opens at Riccarton to-day. Fino weather has been experienced in Christchurch for the past week and there was every indication there last night of a continuance for 10-day's races. The track will be very fast but tho hard surface will be relieved by a heavy coating of grass. Following are tho fields, with a review of the prospects in each raco by our correspondent : 12.5—SPRING HURDLES, Of £200; 12 miles et. lb. st. lb. Henry of Nightcap ... 9 11 Navarre . .11 8> Advance Camp 9 f> Gold Kuipht .10 10 Revision . i . 9 2 Rational 11. .10 6 Gallivanter ..90 Matiuiri .... 10 6 Sports. King . 9 0 Kapuna .... 9 12 This raco bus drawn a very usoful field, including tho Trenthnm dual winner Henry of Navarre, who had experience of tho course at tho Grand National meeting. lie is a brilliant fencer and as ho is thoroughly seasoned his big weight should not trouble him. Rational 11. has also schooled well and is exceptionally fit. Manuiri ran fair races at Trentham on a track not, to his liking, and may do better. Of tho remainder Gold Knight and Advanco Camp appear to be tho best. The best supported may bo HENRY OF NAVARRE. RATIONAL 11. MANUIRI.
12,45—SPRING PLATE, Of £180; tlnee-year-olds 7.7, four-year-olds and upwards 8.2. mares allowed olb; 1 lliilo st. lb. _ St. lb. MaiWho ..82 Gipsy Love .72 Falkland ..77 Sweet Agnes . 7 2 Davolo ... 7 7 Bettwsycoed . 7 2 Liego Lord .77 There was a surprisingly large number of withdrawals, but tho' material left should ensure a keen contest. Davolo, Falkland, Bettwyscocd and. Sweet Agnes have all raced prominently uf late. The public may fancy SWEET AGNES MANETHO DAVOLO. I.3S—LINWOOD HANDICAP, Ot £180; 7 fur. _ et. lb, et. lb. Drum Fire . 9 0 Dollar Prince . 7 4 Metal Bird . . 8 13 First Song ..72 Niggerhcad . . 8 13 Flying Amy ,72 Blazon, ... 812 Knocklong ..72 Berate ..... 8 11 Sam Smith ..72 Gaysomo ~85 Eupator .... 7 0 Prostration ..84 Cleaner ... 7 0 Errantry .... 8 1 Sky Rover ... 7 0 Royal Amphora 8 1 Brifiht Red ..70 Trivet .... 7 13 Top Rank ..70 Copyist ... 7 8 Lady Zephyr . 7 0 Last Link ..7 5 Double Shot . 7 0 The biggest field of tho day will contest this race, and tho issue is undoubtedly very open. Over half of the number have nttrocted public attention at recent meetings, and it is some years since such a high-class representation of the hack division has been assembled. At least a dozen of those carded ean be considered entitled to dispute favouritism, but the final summing up may be in favour of ROYAL AMPHORA, BERATE. DRUM FIRE. 2.2O—NEW ZEALAND CUP, Of £IOOO, including cup valued at £75; 2 miles st. lb. st. lb. Inflation ... 8 6 Rocket .... 1 2 Minerval ... 8 0 Southdown ..71 The Smuggler 7 8 Chrysology ..70 Brambletorn . 7 7 Jaloux .... 7 0 Eminent ... 7 7 Ramo .... 7 0 Tout lo Monde 7 7 Epigram ... 7 0 Palantua .... 7 2 The withdrawals of Polydora «ud Takakua seriously reduced the strength of the already weak field, but as the remainder constitute r very even lot. the race is likely to provide a spectacular contest. All the candidates have been seen in action in both islands during the past few weeks, and racegoers thus have had every opportunity to sum up the* prospeots of the 13 aoceptors. Since Polydora and Takakua were taken out there has been a tendency to make Palantua, Rocket and Minerval the favourites, while support seems to have been forth, coming for Southdown, Ramo and Epigram. There is no doubt fancies will take a wide range, but the final favourites will probably be ROCKET, MINERVAL. PALANTUA. 3.IO—WELCOME STAKES, Of £500; two-year-olds; colts and geldings 8.5, fillies 8.0; 5 fur. _ st. lb. st. lb. Horn b Reef . 8 5 Pin Money . 8 K Wonderful . 8 5 Invoice ... 8 5 Marcus Cicero 8 5 Bodyline . , 8' 5 Inverosk ..85 Variant . . . 80 Control ... 8 5 Brown Betty 8 0 Golden Chance 8 5 Queen of Song 8 0 Master Reynard 8 5 <Coronilla ..80 The field is expected to be up to the etandard and numbers of previous years, and the presence of C'oronilla, Control. Mnrcus Cicero. Pin Money. Brown Betty, Invoice, Bodyline and Wonderful will ensure a fast nnd closely-contested sprint. The best supported may be
CORONILLA, PIN MONEY, MARCUS CICERO. 3.SO—APPRENTICES' HANDICAP, Of £180; apprentice riders; 1 mile, fit. lb. st. lb. Walton Park . 0 0 Importance ..77 Aescuhiß ... 8 13 High Rank ~70 Monastic ... 8 8 Final Shot ..70 Some Shamble 8 4 Bright Shade . 7 0 Flower , , . . 7 0 Silver Briar . 7 0 Hich Tor , . 7 B A somewhat disappointing field will parade. Much depends on the choice of riders in a race of this nature, and as there will bo a scarcity of good apprentices some of the contestants will be at n disadvantage. On recent form there will be good support for SOME SHAMBLE, HIGH RANK. SILVER BRIER. 4.3S—STEWARDS' HANDICAP, Of £500; G fur. st. lb. st. lb. j Golden "Wings 9 0 Silver Streak . 7 2 Croupier ... 8 8 True Shaft . , 7 Q Great Star , . 7 12 ; Hurlingham . 7 9 Guarantee ~70 j Tho Quorn ~77 Passion Fruit 7 0 ! Lordly Knight 7 7 Cranford ..70 A high-class field includes representatives from as far north as Gisborno and as far j south as Wingatui. Thore is little doubt that ! Golden Wings will be well supported, as ho 1 lias proved himself one of the best sprinters : the Dominion has produced for many years. | Croupier seems to race best tho first time up and his gallops sinco Trentham have been very impressive. Great Star will not be at his best, while The Quorn, Guarantee and Passion Fruit can be dismissed in the meantime. Hurlingham, Lordly Knight, Silver Streak, Truo Shaft, Kerbside and Cranford aro entitled to serious consideration. Investors may favour CROUPIER. GOLDEN WINGS, • SILVER STREAK. 5.20 RICCARTON HANDICAP, Of £200; 9 fur. bI. lb. at. lb. Ranelagh ..89 Forestry ... 8 0 Chrysology ..88 Ni';ht.ly ... 8 0 The • Royal Sceptre 7 7 Masqucrader 8 G Water Polo ..77 Spoon .... 8 2 Monastic ... 7 7 Silvox .... 8 2 Heather Glow 7 7 Miladi .... 8 1 This should provide one of the best races of tho day. The majority of those carded can be said to have bright prospects, and favouritism is likely to be shared by SILVOX. NIGHTLY. RANBLAGH. RACING FIXTURES November 4. R—Auckland Racing Club. November 4, 0, 8, 11—Canterbury Jockey Club. November !), 11 —"Whangarei Racing Club. November 11—Hawke's Bay .Tockey Club. November 15—Dannevirko Racing Club. November 18—Carterton Racing Club. November 18, 20—Waikato Racing Club. November 25—Levin Racing Club, FAST PASSAGE'S PROGRESS Fast Passage is among the daily workers at Riccarton. So far she has not been tried, her work being long, steady pacing, increasing the pace in tho straight. . It. is hoped she will stand a preparation with a view to running in tho Auckland Cup, but sho works heavily bandaged in front, and when she pulled up on Wednesday morning it was very evident that sho was tender in the source of the trouble which put her aside last summer.
