ENGLISH MOUNTAINEER

MISS KATE GARDINER | SEVENTH VISIT TO DOMINION 1 Miss Kate Gardiner, an English alpinist, who is making her seventh visit to New Zealand, is at present in Christ church. She is a member of the Ladies' Alpine Club. 'T was brought up v.h<--re I could see the mountains of Wal ■. ' said Miss Gardiner, in an interview. "Every day I looked at them across the Mersey and the Dee. Then I went holidaying and climbed them. I used to spend several months there every year. Later, I went to Switzerland with my parents, who were both alpinists." Since her last visit to New Zealand Miss Gardiner has been taking part in an alpinist camp at Paradise Valley, near Lake Louise, Canada. At this rendezvous mountaineers scaled hitherto unclimbed peaks under the leadership of experienced guides lent by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, while an army of emateur guides hovered near eager to lend a hand. Miss Gardiner herself made several new ascents.

Seven years ago, when Miss Gardiner first visited New JSeafand, there was less interest in climbing than there is now. She says she notices a great, increase in mountaineering enthusiasm. " And ski-ing, too. Both men and women are far keener than they used to be. This change is most marked."
