SKI-ING ON RUAPEHU LARGE NUMBER OF ENTRANTS ANNUAL CONTESTS COMMENCED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] THE CHATEAU, Wednesday The annual winter sports of tho Ruapehu Ski Club were commenced on tho slopes of Mount Ruapehu to-day in perfect weather. Some of tho fields comprised 20 competitors gathered from Auckland, "Wellington, • Taranaki, Hawke's Bay and the South Island, and the races were watched by a large number of spectators. Eighteen inches of snow have fallen during tho past few days, and ski-ing conditions were excellent. Tho results were: — y Men's Downhill Race (open, with a drop of 1200 ft.). —B. Murphy (Dawson's Falls), lm 40s, 1; J. C. Robertson (Te Kuiti), 2m 535, 2; 11. W. Martin (Inglewood), 3m 555, 3. Men's liong Distance Race (open, 4 miles). —R. C. Murio (Wellington), 30m 30s, 1; B. Murphy (Dawson's Falls), 31m 2s, 2; 11. L. Grant (Napier), 33m 4 3-ss, 3. Ladies' Downhill Race. —Miss P. Murphy (Dawson's Falls), lm 15s, 1; Miss J. Beale (Stratford), lm 225, 2; Miss M. Collins (Stratford), lm 495, 3. The events will be continued tomorrow. EVENTS ON MOUNT COOK CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] TIMARU, Wednesday The Aorangi Ski Club's championship meeting began to-day at Ball Glacier, Mount Cook, men's - and women's cross-country events being held. The weather was ideal. There were 50 competitors, representing the Christchurch, Aorangi and Tasman Ski Clubs and tho , Canterbury Winter Sports Club. Interest in the events was keen in view of the approach of the Dominion championships next week. The results were as follows: - Cross-country Open Championship.— Dr. A. H. Frankel (Christchurch Ski Club), 40m. 9 4-os., 1; L. V. Bryant (Tasman Ski Club), 45m. 55., 2; W. B. Myhre (Christchurch Ski Club), 45m. 255, 3. The course was five and a-half miles, two-thirds of which was climbWomen's Cross-country Race. —Mrs. P. Edwards (Christchurch Ski Club), 22m. 58 4-55., 1; Miss D. Mackie (Aorangi Ski Club), 24m. 22 4-55., 2; Mrs. V. N. Williams (Aorangi Ski Club), 24m. 20 2-55., 3. The course was two and . a-half miles.
