SMALL FARMS SCHEME

SUCCESS IN FAR SOUTH MILD WINTER CONDITIONS [by telegraph—own correspondent] DUXEDIN. Wednesday The small farm settlement scheme is working satisfactorily in Otago and Southland. The men have all retained their holdings during the winter and seem to be contented. Most have made good headway with seasonable work, and all have promise of good results in the coming spring and summer. In some cases the designs of cottages as originally drawn have been altered by the Public Works Department so as to meet the needs of larger families. Mr. R. B. Tennent, fields superintendent for Otago and Southland, is quite cheerfuj about farmers' prospects. "We are having a splendid winter." he said. "There has been no more wet weather than one normally expects at this time of the year, and livestock are in wonderful condition for the winter season. Thore has been a freshening of early grass growth, which is usually considered to indicate an early spring. Very little snow has fallen in the high country, and there have been no losses in sheep worth mentioning."
