BANKRUPT TAXI-DRIVER
LOSS OF SERVICE RUN EXPLANATION OF POSITION [llY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHANG AREI, Wednesday A tyankrupt taxi-driver, of "Whangarei, Alfred .Frederick Baker, was examined by the official assignee, Mr. A. L. ,Tressider, to-day. The schedule showed liabilities of £173 and the assets were book debts estimated ti ""produce £7O. In his statement bankrupt said he was married and had two children. In 1025 he bought a farm in Whau Valley for £450. He did not have any capital, eventually got into difficulty and disposed of the farm. He commenced soiling drapery from door to door. He did well and purchased a car and stock to the value of £9BO in 1931, but unfortunately the slump came and he had to sell the goods at cost price. Later he went on relief works and a brother took over the car in payment of moneys owed.
After a period, said bankrupt, he took over the car from his brother and commenced- a taxi service in Whangarei, getting other owner-drivers to join. He was doing well and commenced a daily service car frorii Awanui to Whnngarei in opposition to Hutley's Motors, but with the passing of the Transport Licensing Act he was revised a licence. He appealed against the decision and was unsuccessful. He attributed his bankruptcy to the cessation of the Awauni-Whangarci service car, with, the costs of the appeal, together with the general economic# conditions. Bankrupt said he would make an endeavour to pay at least 10s in the pound. The assignee said that bankrupt had made an earnest effort in the past to carry on and he would report favourably on his conduct. The meeting was adjourned.
