COMMENTS ON FORM STEEPLECHASE INCIDENTS LEADER FALLS AT LAST FENCE [BY TEIiEOBAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Saturday Foreign Queen was a hot favourite for the Nursery Handicap and won handily, after being well placed throughout. Passion Fruit threw out a strong challenge in the run homo, and, but for being stopped n bit on tho home turn, may have won. Phur Lap's brother. All Clear, failed to begin and took no part in the running, going afterthe field at i» big interval. Mi3s Hastings, lying in the rear of tho field in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, went up fast from the half-mile and led over tho lust fence to stall off Mia Stella comfortably in tho run home. High Falutin' r was a fair third and Million was fourth. The winner won nicely, but High Falutiu' could have covered less ground. Slippery got out well in tho Hack sprint in a straggling start, and aftur waiting on tho lenders, Swift and Sure, Asterisca and Sunstead, to the straight, came on to win decisively. Asterisca and Sunstead both stopped, but Swift, and Sure ran c>n for second from Bradman and Sabatini. The winner is now out of hacks. Tho Hawke's Bay Steeplechase resolved itself into a question whether tho favourite, Luna Lux, would catch Red Bank, who raced away in front and opened «r> a gap of 100 yards. Luna Lux was up with him nt the second to last fence, but Bed Bank here jumped away from him. They took tho last fence together and Red Bank fell on landing, leaving Luna Lux to win unchallenged. Revel completed tho course for second. Red Bank was remounted and was ridden in for third money, Lochaby fell and all ~tlie others ran off. Luna Lux had Red Bank beaten when the latter fell. Both gave , a fine/exhibition of jumping. Chief Marionette, getting a wonderful run through on the fence in the hack mile, came from an otherwise impossible position to win decisively from Aesculus and Walton Park, who were tho favourites. Both had every chance. The winner paid double figures and gave the hurdle horseman Alan McDonald his third winning ride, as he had previously won on Miss Hastings and Lima. Lux. In a poor-class. field of hacks in the Woodlands Handicap, Lady Ronald was always handy and won well from the maiden Sunstead, who had started earlier in the day. Grumpy, tho favourite, had every chance on tho fence, but finished only fourth. Hybiscus showed great pace to tho straight, where he closed up. Courtyard finished rtp favourite for" the final event and after allowing False Scent. Royal Hunting and Huntingdon to lend him to the straight, he rnn on too solidly for his more brilliant opponents. Royal Hunting held on for second to pay a nico price. Lady Spy ran a creditable race throughout and Paleta made up a lot of ground to head off Huntingdon for fourth, the latter weakening in the straight. Navaho ran much below his first day's form and was never n possibility. Courtyard gave Voitre his only win of the meeting, bringing his total for the season to 119. TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE TANERIRI AND MANAWHENUA Somo interesting work was performed on the No. 2 grass track at Ellerslie 011 Saturday, when the weather was beautifully fine for training. Wee Pat finished in front of Patutahi at, the end of a round in 1.58 l-ss, the last six furlongs in 1.21 1-5. Catoma, not doing his best at any part, .took 2.5 4-5 for a similar task, the last si,x in 1.25 2-5. King March and Caliente, after running tho first two in 2Gs, completed five furlongs in 1.0 2-5. King March went well and Caliente also impressed for a novice. Dark Marble was "going better than Morehu at the end of three furlongs in 40 2-ss. Deputy Ruler was held back to Darma over a similar distance in 40 2-fis. Kiltowyn, who had a lot of speed on when ho jumped off, recorded 38 l-ss, a good effort, as he was easing up at the end. Taneriri and Manawhenua, carrying light woights, traversed half a mile in 51 l-ss, putting plenty of dnsli into their work. Tarporley and Love Story did an easy five furlongs in 1.9 4-5, with the former running on strongly at the finish, Alpinus, after covering three in 39 l-ss, completed nix furlongs in 1.22 4-6. Sunny Sky did strong work on the same track. INJURY TO ADVENTUS Advontus has brought Ilia career • temporarily to a close as tho result of his escapade in the Juno Steeplechase at Hastings. When he-crashed into tho fence near, the gate leading bn to the tracks he did so heavily and brought down with n clean fracture a big elcctrio light pole. He severely injured a shoulder and it will bo ' stone time beforo ho' fully recovers.
