HAWERA HORSES WELLINGTON CANDIDATES CHIEF LINE 'AS A HURDLER [from our own correspondent! lIAWERA, Saturday Heavy rain has 6oaked the Hawera tracks, but tho eand path, which has recently been widened and done up, is standing trainers in good stead and is being used for pace-work. Nothing out of tho ordinary has been performed, the work being principally routine exercise by horses intended for the Wellington meeting. Since his return from Ellerslie Copey has been doing a iittlo road-work, but iii view of Trentham engagements ho will soon be going solidly again. Carfex has been kept in steady work, and he looks m epiendid iettle. He pleased iiis trainer by tile manner in winch lie came tnrough his racing and travelling on tlie Auckland trip. Gibraltar is just pottering about at present. The Tiger returned in good ehape' from Foxton, wlicro he appreciated tho firmer going, running out seven furlongs at his first attempt in good style. G. A. Richards, las owner-trainer, is confident that The Tiger will be found running out u ruilo well under suitable couoitons. * Chief Line, who disappointed at Otaki, where he failed to handle the bad going, is to bo given an opportunity over hurdles, and was given his first lessons during the week. Witii W. Grindlay in tho saddle ho acquitted himself well, jumping safely and quickly. J. Fryer has Haunui, March Alono and Weatherzane going solidly with a view to competing at Trentham. Golden Hair is going along nicely in her preliminary work. It is confidently expected that she will be found capable of staying over a distance of ground. Tenacre is getting through useful tasks and is shaping up a bit. R. Brough has been giving Rapper a course of road exercise, and he has built up considerably. He is to resume trnCk-work in a day or two. The Ruapapa mare Grey Papa, who was under Brough's care, has undergone a change of ownership, and has been sent to Feilding. Amyril, tho Psychology—Amyrin filly, who performed impressively at Foxton, received her early education at Hawera under R. Brough's direction, but owing to developing kneo soreness was taken out of training and returned to her owner. This season the New Plymouth trainer R. Barlow secured her on lease, and is hopeful that her disability will not recur. Amyril. who ehowod any amount of speed when trained hero, has developed into a fine-looking three-year-old, and has only to remain sound to do good service for Barlow. Richfield is among tho regular workers, but is not pleasing his connections, as he displays soreness after working, tho cause being hard to locate. At the Wellington winter meeting last year Little Doubt, carrying 8.13, ran third to Royal Bengal, 8.0, and Fast Passage, 9.0. in tho Whyte Memorial, and on the second day, carrying 9.0, was third to Retract, 8.5, and Fast Passage, 9.4. in tho Parliamentary Handicap. Little Doubt showed a glimpse of returning form at Otaki, and under D. Cox's care may soon gain further successes, as ho is a great winter track galloper. Round Table and Pfschiera are tho other activo members of Cox'e team. APPRENTICE'S TRANSFER The apprentice R. J. Fearn, who was formerly articled to C Morse at Takamm, has been transferred to tho Hawke's Bay trainer W. Corlett. Ho left last week. BIRKBECK'S BREAKDOWN Birkbeclc broke down in the Juno Steeplechase at Hastings throe fences before ho finally retired from tho contest. A. McDonald says that lie felt him go, but as ho continued to hold his place and run on, ho kept him at it, until later he gave very definite signs of having broken down, so ho pulled him up. Birkheck would have been hard to beat had he kept sound. It is hard luck for his connections, for he was ill good order aftor a long spell, and in all probability he will not be seen again this winter. RACING FIXTURES .Tune 22, 24—Napier Park Racing Club.
